Sweater Adventures Part 2

019/365

These started out as plain arm warmers yesterday after cutting the sweater up, but were quickly morphed into Emo/Goth looking arm warmers...and my older daughter has already claimed them. They are the nice black salt and pepper color with silver rings sewn on and laced with purple lacing.  They really look great on and are so soft and warm!

Amazing what you can do with one small sweater!

018/365

Over the next few days, I'll show you what you can do with one small sweater that has been stuffed in a donation bag and ends up at the Goodwill outlet.  This was a very small, soft cotton sweater.  On day one, I made a lovely neck warmer with a lettuce edge on it.  This could also be converted to a multi-use item by putting a draw string in one end and using it  for a hat, but I didn't want to do that tonight.  Perhaps later.

I have been wearing it all night to chase off the chills.  I hope you enjoy tonight's first sweater creation, and it goes great with my skirt!!

Harvest Skirt

017/365

I am giving you a glimpse into what I wear and feel most comfortable in.  This is me.  I know it is not up to date fashion, nor is it the most chic skirt, but it is me.

I destashed a beautiful vintage calico fabric in a soft blue floral with a background that is somewhat tea stained/grey in coloring.  I LOVE pockets and you can see pockets on pockets and I have secret pockets and a pocket to hold long sticks in too.  I will be wearing this skirt in my herb garden, so I added huge harvest pockets to it.  I will be adding skirt cinchers to pull up the skirt when trudging through deep grass or water.

The petticoat is one I made a while back, but I wear it with all of my long skirts.  It is made out of the softest recycled bed skirt ever.  100% cotton.  It is trimmed with green tassels left over from someones forgotten and discarded curtain project.  If the winner of the January drawing chooses a Harvest skirt, I will make a custom one for you out of some fabric that I have on hand.  I will customize the pockets for you too.  This one is mine.

I do hope you enjoy my Destash for today, and yes, I really do dress just like this...this is on my body sized sewing manikin.

Close up of Harvest Skirt print...and I made those little handy bags too.

Back view...my dear sister in Colorado calls these big butt skirts.  But what does she put on when she needs comfort and connection with the earth and her sister?  One of my Big Butt Skirts!

Harvest Skirt with the front pinned up so you can see my petticoat too.  Pure relaxation and comfort.  I also love to layer a pair of soft pantaloons under this too.  I can see why our formothers wore these...they are surprisingly cool in summer and warm in winter.  I make them out of flannel...now we are talking Supreme winter comfort.  Curl your legs up and under, cuddle in front of the fireplace and read a good book while sipping sweet herbal tea.....ah.....

Sunday is a day of rest for me...AND ONE OF LEARNING BALANCE!

016/365

I have decided to take this Sunday as a day of rest and of restoration of my creative energies.  Please if you get a chance read my disclaimer on the right.  It says everything that I want to say about my blog and who I am.  I appreciate everyone's support, but I should have put that disclaimer up on day 001/365.  So for those of you following me on my blog...thank you.

I am honored and humbled by the wonderful comments and loving inquires.  Thank you so much for having faith in me and my mission of destashing and creating something beautiful and meaningful from the chaos that used to be my workroom!  Everything I do, I try to do with love, devotion and knowledge.

I am spending the day with my family and resting before the next week's work.  I did dream today's project, but it may take two days worth of work to complete it, so my Destash for today is this:

BALANCE WHAT WE DO IN THIS LIFE:  I'm destashing my tendency toward obsession and embracing balance.  (Major life lesson here for me.)

Ocean Breezes

015/365

As I reflect on my crafting organizational skills over the past few years, I can't believe I spent so much time in acquisitions rather than in creating or production.  It is easy getting caught up in the "can't think of something to make, so let me go and buy something that inspires me" mode.  OR....look at this great sale at Michaels or ACMoore or (insert your favorite craft store here), let me go and acquire more inspirational things to make something out of.  Unfortunatly, I have spent some much time, effort and resources gathering and storing rather than sitting down and doing and creating that there was a double fold problem:  Wasting resources:  money, time, ideas and guilt: spending money, wasting time and having nothing to show for it.  Now, making the commitment of "The Daily Destash 365"  it is a promise to my self and an accountability to others to JUST DO IT.  Stop acquiring and start creating.  I am finding my inspiration not in wandering around looking at things to acquire to put into my stash and do something with someday, but rather in something I see, something I feel or something that I dream.  Isn't that the way it should be?

So long story short, Today's creation...I know I said I was going to sew, but my muse took me in a different direction for the moment when my daughter said this morning:  Mom, I'm going to do ocean themed makeup today..........*´¨)¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨)(¸.•´ (¸.•` ¤That's magic muse dust there......I give you Ocean Breezes earrings.  They are created totally out of stashed items that I thought I could use someday.  Blue glass beads cut off of a salvaged top from a Goodwill bin, Pearls cut off of a Goodwill sweater, Clear beads from an old curtain.  The silver wire and ear hooks I had in my stash.

Ocean Breezes
I am still going to be sewing today...I have so many ideas at the moment that I am writing them in a journal for future reference, and all of them are to be done with things that I have waiting for me, waiting for their time of creation.  Waiting for me to JUST DO IT.

Have a beautiful and creative day..................Namaste'

Lost and Found

014/365

LOST AND FOUND

I thought I lost a part of me.  Something I couldn't remember and perhaps didn't know that I lost it.  I really didn't know if I would ever get it back...read on and discover what it is that I am re-discovering.  Something perhaps that truly wasn't lost.

Snowflake Obsidian and Silver
A stone of Honesty, Sincerity and Truth, Obsidian will bring out the Warrior spirit in you.  It can help reach into your subconscious, reclaim yourself, and help you find or re-discover forgotten abilities within yourself

Silver is told to bring advantage to it's wearer throughout life.  It is used to conjure patience and perseverance to the wearer, and it is used extensively with gemstones due to the fact that the metal attracts and retains the qualities emitted by the stones.
It is known to enhance the powers of the moon, particularly during the full and new moons. Throughout the world it is identified with the lunar manifestations of the Great Mother, the eternal goddess.  As the metal is reflective, as the moon reflects the light of the sun, so does silver reflect negativity from the wearer. Tiny silver globes, or any sliver jewelry can be worn for magical security; used to provide protection again evil intent, reflecting spells of harm back to the sender.

Feathers
The feather is useful in cleaning auras.  It is a symbolic connection with the air elemental.

  • I've had this snowflake obsidian and silver spacers for a very long time and have been wanting to create something with them, but just didn't have the motivation.  If you look closely at the silver spacers, you can see that they have a light patina on them, or rather...tarnished.   Polishing it crossed my mind briefly, but then I decided to leave it a little tarnished to remind me of keeping my creative side polished.  The feather is there to help connect and cleanse my creative aura.

I've never worked with Snowflake Obsidian before so it surprised me to find out what it means.  One of the most enjoyable aspects of this creative odyssey is get to know new stones and their deeper meanings.  I'm finding that I am truly re-discovering forgotten abilities within myself.  I hope that this blog inspires you to re-discover forgotten abilities in yourself.  Get some snowflake obsidian....tuck it in your pocket, put it on a silk cord around your neck or wrist and see what happens.

Thank you for blogging with me today.

Minerva Dancing

012/365

I open my heart and soul to the truth.
And ask that my life’s journey be illuminated before me,
I ask for the wisdom to see.
Even in the darkness of life’s challenges.
And the ability to manifest my true path.

Minerva Dancing
Copper:  Copper provides a harmonic connection between the physical and astral bodies.  It allows one to recognize the barriers which are in the path of ones development.
Moss Agate:   Moss agates are considered the most powerful of the agates. It was the agate of warriors. Moss agate is the most powerful of the agates that helps balance emotional energy. It helps the user to let go of anger and bitterness, so the emotions are balanced.
Owl:  If the owl is calling you, or you are aware of the owl being present in your life, dreaming or waking.  You are being called upon to open your eyes, ears and mind to the truth of a situation. To listen to the wisdom deep in your heart and soul. That still small voice is trying to reach you in some way. To assist you or help you in a current challenge you may be facing.
Tap into the power of the Owl by calling on your own intuition, listen to your own wisdom for there is something you need to see or hear.

Minerva Dancing (close up)
This has been an incredibly stressful week at work.  Some of it is internal stress, but alot of it is external stress.  I wanted to create something tonight with deep thought and purpose not only to bring meaning and healing to my feelings about work and the stressors, but also to my friends who might read what each of these  materials means when using it with love and choosing it to create something beautiful.  I wish deep healing, growth and wisdom to myself and to those in my life whether you are online or in town.

Teddy Bear Tuesday

011/365
Today is Teddy Bear Tuesday.  I saw these tiny teddies for a quarter and couldn't resist them.  I had everything else to make, so it was a little bit of a creative destash.  The girls love them, even the teenager!  If I could just find some tiny skulls to put on them...then they would be perfection.

I hope you like today's creative offering.

Grandmother Moon

010/365

Tonight I want to share with you a story I wrote for my mother and grandmother and all of my mother ancestors.  We were once a proud nation.  A nation of wise women and leaders.  We must listen to our grandmothers, for they hold great love, life and experience within their collective memories.  I hope you enjoy this story.
Grandmother Moon
Illus. by:  Lynda Hoffman-Snodgrass
please visit her website by clicking on the link.  I take no credit for creating the beautiful art above.  It is solely the work of Lynda Hoffman-Snodgrass.
I hope you enjoy this creative tribute to our Earth Mothers.  I did create what is below.

Grandmother Moon
After grandfather died, my grandmother had no home.  She stayed with each of her grown children until the moon grew bright and full, then she moved on.
“Grandmother,” I asked one day as we sat under a tree and brushed each other’s coal black hair. “Daddy said we must move soon.  He said we wouldn’t have a home for a while.  I’m afraid.”  Her leathery face curled in thought.
“My little one,” she said as I braided her hair.  She spread her arms wide, “This is our home.  Every blade of grass, every leaf on every tree, every grain of sand is our home and the home of all things.
“What do you mean grandmother?” I asked while I tucked golden leaves in the dark folds of her hair.
“Come with me and I’ll show you.”
We watched the squirrels build their nests, leaf by leaf.  We watched the ants dig their tunnels, rolling each grain of sand with care.  We watched a caterpillar spin its cocoon and beavers pile stick upon stick until they sheltered their young.  We took cover from the rain in a cave, and rested in the cool shade of the trees.  Grandmother said, “Home is where your family is.”  I learned home is where you make it.
Grandmother went away, but promised to return with the Planting Moon.
When the moon was bright and round, I watched for Grandmother.  I saw her long shadow stretched out in front of her as she walked up the lane.  She had her one bag slung over her shoulder and her feather bed rolled up under her arm.  I ran to meet her.
“Grandmother, How did you find us?  Aren’t you afraid of walking in the dark?”
“My little one,” she said, “the moon follows me and shows me the way.  I am never alone or lost with its light guiding my path.”
“Grandmother, what do you mean?”
“I will show you, little one.”
We watched the moon, night after night. It grew smaller and then grew larger.  Wherever we went, the moon bathed us in its silvery light.  We planted corn under the full moon.  We watched the deer and raccoons the bats and the possums.  We listened to the night songs of crickets.  She taught me to count the days by the moon’s many faces.  Grandmother went away, but promised to return with the harvest moon.  I learned to count the days until grandmother’s return.
Four full moons waxed and waned before the Harvest Moon lead Grandmother to our door.  I showed her the tall corn we planted together many months before.  We walked hand in hand between the green walls.  She whispered stories in my ear.
“Grandmother,” I asked one day.  “Why do the corn leaves shush, shush, shush in the wind?”
“Little one,” she said, “lie down with me near the corn, and feel the pulse of life in the earth and listen to the prayer of thanks from the corn as it stretches its arms toward the sun.”
I lay still on the cool ground.  I felt the Earth’s pulse and listened to Earth’s many songs of life.  My grandmother said, “When you touch Mother Earth, you know you are alive and part of the ground and the sky and the water and all living things.”  She taught me to feel the life within myself and to feel the life in every blade of grass and in every leaf on the tree.  I laid my head on grandmother and listened to her beating heart and learned her song of life.
“Come grandmother,” I said to her one day.  “Take off your shoes and wade in the creek with me.  I’ll show you how to make leaf boats.”
We sat on a big flat rock, making our leaf boats.  The water eddied around our feet.
“Grandmother, why we do we have the same crooked baby toes?
“Little one,” she said, “Be proud of your toes.  Many great warriors and wise women had the same toes.  It is a mark of our family, of our people.  Just as water flows in this creek, our ancestors flow through you.”
We waded in the stream with our bare feet.  We sailed our leaf boats and picked up pebbles.  Grandmother said, “Father Water knows the beautiful pebble within each rock that waits patiently inside until it is freed.” She placed a smooth stone in my hand.  It warmed to my touch.
“This is your patience stone,” she said.  “Hold it and remember, all things in their time.”  I held my stone and learned to wait and to dream.
Grandmother went away with the Winter Moon.  She promised to return to help me plant corn again.
Three full moons passed when I learned Grandmother would never return.
She is now with my grandfather and our ancestors.  She is in her forever home.
But grandmother is part of all things around me.  She is the earth, the sky, the wind and the water.
When I miss her, I lie on the earth and feel her beating heart.  I look at the corn and see her stretching to the sky.  I listen to the wind and hear her stories whispered in my ear.  I wade in the creek and feel her life song and the songs of our ancestors flow through me.
She taught me to feel the earth to breath the wind and to taste the sky.
When I feel lost or alone, I hold my smooth stone.  It warms to my touch and I remember:  “All things in their time.”
Then I look up at Grandmother Moon and know that she is with me.  She follows me wherever I go.  Her words fill my heart and her spirit lights my path.

Cocktails at 8 and Snow and Ice

009/365

An interesting thing has happened this week.  I have committed my self to creativity and it seems to be spilling over into my girls as well.  They both have sat at the workbench with me and designed some beautiful earrings and together.....TOGETHER.....we have made their designs into reality.  My youngest daughter made a gorgeous pair in goldstone and copper with copper chains and then gave them to her sister...she immediately put them on and then went to a friends house for the night...so I don't have a photo of them yet, but I'll post that tonight.  My youngest then designed the pair you will see dangling on the wire in the photo and I call them Snow and Ice.  They are pewter snowflakes with ice droplets on sterling silver chains.  My Cocktails at 8 pair are right next to them they are the black crystal droplets with the silver icy droplets mixed in on the sterling chain with silver earwires.  Next to them are an experimental feather pair of earrings...mixed medium with sterling silver, feathers, mother of pearl shell discs and alot of patience on those.  But they do look fabulous on.  I hope that you are enjoying my creations.  I'm sure having alot of fun making them.  So this first week in the Trinket challenge 365 has done more than just stimulated creativity, it has also bubbled over into creating family time with my girls...and what is more important than that?  With love and light bubbling over from my heart.......hopefully through my words and photos....I wish all who read this....Peace.

Sweet Basil 008/365

Sweet Basil

My mind has been drifting to summer days with the bees buzzing around the basil.  The aroma of basil has been stirring longings of working in my herb garden again.  I look forward to digging in the earth, feeling the sun on my back and the sweet smell of basil when you brush it with your hands.  I found this wool roving bead in a knitting shop in Greensboro and fell in love with it.  When paired with pale green Swarovski crystasl and tiger tail they remind me of the look of summer basil after a rain with droplets shimmering on leaves.

REAL.....whole wheat pancakes.

007/365

Something creative from my past

Whole Wheat Pancakes

When I was a much younger woman, I had an organic garden plot in my back yard. I dug the whole garden by myself...20ftx30ft with a spade and a rake. It was the most grounding wonderful experience a 25 year old farmgirl in the city could ask for. I raised beans, peas, pumpkins, corn, tomatoes and watched my toddler son walk between the rows of plump veggies and pluck sweet peas right off of the vine, pop them open and gobble the sweet little nuggets right there in the garden. (never could get him to eat them cooked at his highchair). We had early spring lettuce soup, steamed sweet peas, luscious buttery corn on the cob. I even dug a hole in the back yard and made a cooking pit. I squatted over it like I imagined my native American ancestors did. Over the years I look back at that time in my life as an earthy, nature girl time. Me with my Rodale Organic Gardening book in hand, a babe on my hip and my long hair in braids, feeling in tune with the earth and the wind and the sun and all parts of nature around me. There was no better feeling than my spade slicing through the moist earth, the feel of soil in my hand, the sound of the morning doves in the distance and children laughing in my yard...where did it all go?

I went to college and learned how to function in the "real" world. I chased after some societal dream of having more and buying more and doing less for myself. Along with that, I left that Earth girl behind. I never mourned her passing in my 30's and early 40's. As I near 50, I am looking back in retrospect and wanting to regain a little of that part of who I really am, deep inside of me. I want to regain the whole foods, the whole life the joy of earth between my toes and fingers.

Anyway, I digress.....if you are still here with me, Wow, you are pretty tough....the point of my blogging today is to share a recipe with you that I got from a dear LDS friend of mine. She gave me a bag of whole wheat and a card with this recipe. I made them years ago and loved them and then lost the card. My DH found this recipe online for me on the Utah Wheat Board site. I had purchased a small bag of whole wheat kernels this week and wanted to make these pancakes this weekend....so here is a photo of the results. They are delicious and are easy to make. So if you would like to capture a little bit of the whole foods foodie, I highly recommend these. I guess the making of these and the taste of them brough back my memories of my organic garden and that feeling of wholeness in my life. I hope you enjoy them:
Whole Wheat Kernel Blender Pancakes
1 cup whole wheat kernels
1 egg
2 T. sugar
3 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup oil
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Place 1 cup wheat kernels and 1 cup milk in blender. Blend for 3 minutes. Then add rest of milk and blend for another 1 minute. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend. Bake on hot griddle until bubbles begin to pop, turn and bake other side until golden brown. Serve hot with butter and honey or maple syrup.

Enjoy.....thanks for blogging with me today.

A Gentle Spring Breeze 006/365

The Daily Destash!!

One of my favorite Trinketeers...actually she who started her Trinketeering first and inspired a few others of we Trinketeers, did a theme of blowing in the wind and created a gorgeous set of earrings.  Well, after placing my earrings on this calendar artwork hanging above my workbench for photographing them....gosh...they are blowing in the wind too!  LOL...I guess mine are more of a gentle spring breeze echoing a blue sky.  They were simple and fun to make, hope you like them.  They are hand crocheted beads that came in a thrifted bag of beads, sterling silver beads, jump rings chain and ear wires.

These were actually inspired by my "good friend" (Heather you know what I mean) at work.  She printed a bunch of earring photos for me and she loves chains and baubles too.    Let me know what you think!  I made two pairs of these!!

Below is a revision of my Breast Cancer awareness necklace.  I like it much better this way.  Just can't get a good photo of it.  It is a little longer than a choker and dangles between the girls nicely!  If ya know what I mean....wink, wink  ;)  It is simply stunning up close...I think my older daughter is going to wear it to her honor society initiation with a gorgeous purple floaty dress.  She has ordered matching earrings for it, so guess what might be posted tomorrow.  And I have this beautiful set of floating crystal earring in my head right now

Thank you so much for reading my blog tonight.

A trinket....rather amateurish, but I was making this one through tears... 005/365

Very emotional day today.  Went in early, worked hard all day so I could get off early to get a Mammogram.  The first two I had 8 years ago, nearly scared me to death...but all was clear.  The worst part was the humiliation of it all.  I had a very uncaring technician who left me in the squeezer, naked on the top half while she stepped out to take a personal phone call and left the door wide open that was in direct site of the waiting room....not such a good experience.  That was in VA and that former employer of mine shall remain un-named....Today, I went to a clinic sponsored by the organization I work for, and it was actually a very good experience...as good as it can be considering the squeezer...but she was kind and efficient and locked the door when we entered the scan room and never left.  One would think a nurse like myself, wouldn't be afraid of much, but perhaps, we know too much and are too traumatized by what we ourselves do to people....anyhoo....this little trinket, done when I got home tonight while I was sobbing is not the prettiest thing in the world, but it came from the heart.  The pink ribbon is a pretty thrifted ribbon, and all of the other stones have a meaning to me:  Pink Pearls and sparkly clear crystals symbolize the tears we shed for our lost sisters and mothers and for just being women in general and tears we shed over the fear of losing ourselves and families to such a disease.  The moon stone is for healing of my heart and since I am totally a moon child, I always have to have moonstone.  The amethyst crystal is just for the feeling that everything is ok...that there is always hope.  Oh, and don't get alarmed...I'm just a big baby and this was a well visit.  Doesn't make it any easier especially since over 27 years, I nursed so many dear sisters with Breast Cancer.
Sleep well, and thank you for reading.........Namaste'

TuTu Tuesday

The Daily Destash  Project 004/365  (a second project for today, to get me on 4 for day 4)

Just what every girl needs.  I never had a tutu as a child, never really knew what a tutu was back.  My older daughter LOVES tutus, especially the ones that you can get at Hot Topic kind of like the one shown if you click on tutu in the title line.  So in keeping with my committment of The Daily Destash...I used some fabric that was rescued from a thrift store a couple of years ago, an old metal black zipper from a deconstructed item,  a brass key purloined from a very yucky sweater and two colors of tulle in three layers under the skirt.  The closure is a vintage black shiny button.  I hope you enjoy today's destash!

I'm sorry but my daughter said that this one is not up for the giveaway, because she has already claimed it and it is going to school on her tomorrow!

If anyone is interested, I might publish a TUTU TUTORIAL!!  It is my original pattern for this and it takes about....wait for it........Two hours to make!  LOL

I published twice today, just to get me on the right date and project. I'm actually one ahead, but I'll do another one tomorrow....Hmmmm....what will it be...one never knows what may come out of my head next!  mwah hahahaha!!!  Thanks for reading and supporting my Daily Destash Blog! I also put a NO SEW tutu tutorial link over in the links at the right!  Have fun and destash!!                       Leave me a comment...CU later........................G

The Daily Destash: Origami Boxes

004/365

I needed some boxes for the jewelry I've been making!

I used my 2010 Calendar for these boxes.  It was just too pretty to throw away.  I also dug out the plain cardboard bottoms from Costco's empty box bin....nothing wasted!  These are really fun to make.  Try some...very cheerful and extremely useful!!  And I have alot of months of box tops left for more!!  I just need to put in a small square of cotton fluff and voila'  A box fit for a gift!!

I placed a link to the pattern that I used for these little lovelies in today's header, just click on "Origami Boxes."  Enjoy and I hope you try some!!

This is a little something for tomorrow's Destash...

Daily Destash Day 003/365

This is going to a friend already, but it is a travel altar kit especially designed for those who are ghost hunters and go into some pretty scary situations.  At first glance it looks like a tin of Curiously Strong Mints by Altoids, but open it up and you have a complete kit for fighting the bad guys, or gouls.  Hope you enjoy this little Trinket.  It has a fully working broom too.

Thanks for looking!  I hope she enjoys this little trinket gift. I can always make another...I have plenty in my stash if the winner for January chooses this.  I have to get up early for work tomorrow, so decided to post this early.
